The Right To Be Heard

 

A community cannot be truly democratic if some people are never given the chance to speak.

In many places, decisions are made about people's lives without asking the people who will be affected by those decisions. They are told what is best for them, rather than being invited to explain what they actually need.

The right to be heard is more than having a microphone or a place at a meeting. It means knowing that your opinion has value, even when you do not have money, influence or a powerful name behind you.

I believe civic participation begins with listening. When people are encouraged to speak and leaders are willing to listen, communities become more informed and more accountable.

Democracy should not only be something we experience during elections. It should be something we experience in our everyday lives.
