The Freedom to Disagree

The Freedom to Disagree One of the most important tests of a society is how it treats people who disagree with the majority. It is easy to defend freedom of expression when someone is saying something we agree with. The real test comes when we hear an opinion that makes us uncomfortable. Freedom does not mean that every opinion is correct. It means people should be able to express lawful opinions without being threatened or silenced simply because others dislike them. A society where everyone is afraid to speak may look peaceful from the outside, but silence is not always peace. Sometimes, it is fear. We need to learn how to disagree without turning disagreement into hatred. That is not weakness. It is part of living in a free society.
